What is Mucoid Plaque?

Mucoid plaque is a concept popularized by naturopaths like Richard Anderson, Robert Gray and Bernard Jensen. It is a combination of mucus like material and waste matter which lines the gastrointestinal tract. It is composed of mucin, fecal matter, lymph and various types of proteins and is supposed to be blackish-green in color. Richard Anderson coined the term.. Anderson describes it as”gel-like, viscous and slimy mucus that forms as a layer or layers covering epithelial cells in various hollow organs, especially all the organs of the canal.”

Doctor Bernard Jensen, DC, ND, Ph.D., writes in his book, ‘Tissue Cleansing through Bowel Management’, “The heavy mucus coating in the colon thickens and becomes a host of putrefaction. The blood capillaries to the colon begin to pick up the toxins, poisons and noxious debris as it seeps through the bowel wall. All tissues and organs of the body are now taking on toxic substances. Here is the beginning of true autointoxication on a physiological level.”

According to advocates of alternative medicine, this can be the reason behind many diseases. They claim that it is a severe health threat. It can cause indigestion, impair nutrient absorption and can cause diarrhea. It promotes the development of allergies and in extreme cases may lead to bowel cancer. What it does is increases the growth of parasites and pathogens. Anderson also alleges that amyloidosis, gastric metaplasia, inflammatory bowel disease, hypertrophia, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal lymphangiectasia, mucoviscoidosis, malacoplakia, villous adenoma and polypus are varying manifestations of mucoid plaque.

The body produces mucus to protect itself from toxic chemicals, parasites, harmful microbes and their toxins and drugs. Mucus is a naturally occurring product of the digestive system and plays an important role in protecting it from damage and infection. This secreted mucus over time results in mucoid plaque. It is not excreted routinely. It grows thicker, harder and slows down intestinal action. The toxins get bound to this plaque which leads to bowel toxicity as the plaque becomes a storehouse of toxins and slowly starts emitting these toxins into the bloodstream. This toxicity created ultimately results in overall negative health.
