Mineral Oil For Constipation

Constipation can occur for many reasons. Some of these include negative interaction from medications, hormonal shifts caused by pregnancy and thyroid imbalances, lack of proper fiber intake, not enough fluids in our daily diet, stress and health complications such as Multiple Sclerosis.

There are just as many ways to resolve constipation as there are causes for the condition. We all deal with at some point and it is easy to rely on over the counter medications to resolve the problem but is it always the best method? The truth is that when we are dealing with constipation it is much better to resort to natural interventions rather than relying on medication. Exercising more often, increasing fiber in our diet, drinking more fluids and avoiding foods and drinks that make it worse are all great ways to alleviate the problem. So when the condition is more severe shouldn't we try to do the same?

Why Mineral Oil?

Mineral oil is a less expensive and time tested tool in relieving constipation than over the counter laxatives. It has been used as a natural remedy for quite a few generations, can be easily found in most any drug store and it does the job it was intended for with few side effects.

How Does Mineral Oil Act?

Mineral oil coats the waste, causing it to move through the bowels much more efficiently and keeps the stool soft by retaining its moisture as it passes through your system.

How Much Should I Use?

The only accurate way to know how much is enough for you is to consult with your physician who will use your body weight, height and age to give you the dosage that's best for you. As with any laxative, you should take it before going to bed as it can take about 6-8 hours to take effect.

Always use a medicine cup or measuring spoon to measure your dose. Never rely on a regular spoon to gauge the dose of medication! The oil can be taken alone or stirred into a cup of juice or tea. Follow the oil with 8 ounces of water and make sure that you take 6-8 glasses of water during the course of the day for as long as you are taking it to avoid dehydration.

Excessive amounts of mineral oil can cause stomach cramps and diarrhea just as with taking large doses of other laxatives. It shouldn't be used for long periods because it can interfere with your body's ability to absorb vitamins A, E, K, and D. Don't rely on mineral oil alone to help keep you regular, with excessive or continuous use it can become ineffective just like other laxatives.

You should always ask for a doctor's help in evaluating your heath and the best way to change your diet and exercise plan in order to improve your health. If you have symptoms like bloody or blackened stools, shooting pains, have to use your fingers or hands to aid in elimination or suspect a blockage make sure that you receive medical attention right away, something more serious may be causing your condition.
